Speak.
Saying it out loud changes things. I’ve been mulling this concept over for some time, and just seem to keep running into it. My paraphrase above is a condensate from various books, movies, mythologies, and especially conversations … I suppose really I’m experiencing the newly-purchased-object-supersaturation effect: having just obtained a shiny new whatever, it suddenly confronts...

Spicy.
Yesterday I was eating something and I thought to myself, “Ooh, spicy.” Then I sort of frowned and turned the word “spicy” over in my head a few more times and realized the cause of discomfort with my internal word choice. “Spicy” is too often relegated only to the ideas of hot, sharp and peppery, while the world of spices is so very broad and rich. Why...

Making.
Sometimes a nice, big, freshly cleared surface is the most wonderful thing imaginable. Much like the sort you need to go about a jigsaw puzzle, and for the same reasons.

Really interesting read on collaboration. Thanks for sharing, E, and welcome to tumblr!

"Actually. . . ."
When I’m walking somewhere, or in the middle of some particular process and it occurs to me that I want to do something/go somewhere else first, and consequently change course, it has been my unconscious custom to say quietly to myself, “Actually… .” at the precise moment that I physically move to carry out my new task/direction. I have no idea what brought it to my...

Morphine.
I recommend checking out the delicious sounds of the late Cambridge-based Morphine if you haven’t before. Their characteristic “low rock” was defined by 2-string (!) slide (!) bass, bari sax and drums. A couple faves:
Morphine - “The Night”
Morphine - “Cure for Pain”
(streaming courtesy of grooveshark.com, an also recommended free music streaming...

Finality.
Both well thought and written, Marke. At the core I agree with you, but there’s part of me that still wants to reserve the possibility of capital punishment for extreme cases, which is what it should always be anyway. I mean at least the Osama bin Ladens, the Saddaam Husseins, etc. Situations where there are so many witnesses and such large scale atrocity, on the order of crimes against...

n. an innocuous touch by someone just doing their job—a barber, yoga instructor or friendly waitress—that you enjoy more than you’d like to admit, a feeling of connection so stupefyingly simple that it cheapens the power of the written word, so that by the year 2025, aspiring novelists would be better off just giving people a hug.

Refreshment on the Move.
Triple sec, bitters and club soda on the rocks is quite nearly satisfying in the heat when you’re vacating your apartment and you find that your legitimate liquor is all gone, because naturally, you’ve seen to it that all of it was used up ahead of said move.
Quite nearly satisfying.

Mold.
To answer your question, Nathan, this mold is for a sculpture piece I’m working on. SU’s sculpture department just put on their annual iron pour, and I jumped at the chance to get in on it. Here’s someone’s flickr photo set from last year to give you an idea of the process. I left my iPhone in the car during the pour to avoid melting issues.
Anyway, it’s a...
